Overview
This website is a general information site hosted by Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company (www.hdcco.com), the Construction Manager as Constructor (CMc) for the Renovation of the Federal Building at 50 United Nations Plaza in San Francisco, CA.
The existing 50 UN Plaza building is six stories high, with an occupiable basement, and is approximately 360,000 gross square feet with 193,000 net square feet. The building is currently vacant and will remain vacant throughout the duration of the renovation. When the renovation is complete, 50 UN Plaza will be occupied by the General Services Administration Region 9 offices, which are currently located in the Phillip Burton Federal Building at 450 Golden Gate Avenue. The 50 U.N. Plaza Building was designed by Arthur Brown Jr., architect of San Francisco’s City Hall and three other landmark Civic Center buildings. The Beaux-Arts structure at Leavenworth and McAllister Streets has been vacant since 2007.
The 50 United Nations Plaza Renovation project includes an historic renovation, seismic retrofit, and interior reconfiguration of the existing structure. Renovation work will include a seismic upgrade, high-performance energy efficiency and accessibility improvements, and installation of new electrical, heating, and plumbing systems. Interior spaces will also be reconfigured to create more efficient office space.
The project will create dozens of full-time jobs and small business opportunities, and employ many workers on site during the hazardous materials abatement phase, which will begin immediately. In 2010, the historic renovation phase will generate jobs for hundreds of Bay Area workers and numerous small businesses.
The project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, an economic stimulus package enacted by Congress in February 2009.
Sustainable design and construction principles are being utilized within the context of preserving a historically significant building to pursue LEED Gold or Platinum certification.
